No dance partner required!

want to try lindy hop?

Join us at Swingin' Thursday – there is a free 30 min introduction to Lindy Hop. We do not offer free try-out classes.

You are also welcome to come to our social dances. Just check out Facebook page, sign up for our newsletter, or check our calendar for more information about social dancing and other events.

Taking classes with us

We organize weekly classes on three different levels - Basic, Intermediate and our new Level Plus. Below you can find the level descriptions.

You don't need to sign up with a partner to start dancing lindy hop.

In class we rotate partners and you will dance with all the other people on your level.

We put a lot of effort in to balancing the levels with the same number of leaders and followers.

Please respect and understand that you will affect the balance of the whole level in an unfortunate way by not showing up for the class!

This means that no matter if you sign up on your own or with a partner, we expect you to join the classes every time out of consideration for your fellow dancers. If you do not show up, the balance will be challenged and you will be behind for the following class.

Please respect your fellow dancers and sign up for the level that you match.

If you have doubts about which level is suitable for you, you are always welcome to contact the board (aarhuslindyhoppers@gmail.com), and we will forward you to someone who can help answer your question.

Beginner's workshop

Weekend workshop on Saturday and Sunday

Learn all the basic steps and get ready for our Basic Level. The workshop is held in the beginning of each semester, before the start of the Basic Level weekly classes. 10 hours divided over two days, 5 hours each day, from 10:00 to 15:00. You have to attend both days – no exceptions!

After the beginner's workshop, you have the minimum experience required to participate in Basic Level. It is possible and recommended for beginners to sign up for both Workshop and Basic Level at the same time.

For the exact dates of the different classes, please check the tab REGISTRATION>CLASS REGISTRATION

What to bring?

  • Shoes that are suitable for indoor sport activities (no black soles and no high heels, please)

  • Comfortable clothes

  • A bottle of water

  • A towel, you will probably sweat

  • All your friends!

Basic leveL

Improve your basic dancing skills, work on new basic figures and add new twists to your personal style. You will work with leading and following, which is essential to social dancing.

After you have completed this level at least two semesters you can advance to intermediate level. But remember classes alone are not enough - regular social dancing helps you to improve.

For the exact dates of the different classes, please check the tab REGISTRATION>CLASS REGISTRATION

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You participated both days in our Beginner's Workshop, or

  • You have a minimum of 6 months basic experience from elsewhere

LOCATION/SCHEDULE:

  • Tuesdays 20:00 - 21:45

  • Frederiksbjerg Skole, Ingerslevs Blvd. 2C, 8000 Aarhus C

intermediate level

The intermediate level is for the more experienced dancers. On intermediate you will work on your technique and become confident with many aspects of the dance. You will learn new, more complex moves and learn how you can style and control the dance.

Whenever there is Swingin' Thursday, the class is cancelled.

How would we describe an intermediate dancer? You are familiar with swingouts, lindy circle, Charleston and a variety of 8- and 6-count figures, and you feel comfortable mixing and changing between the different kinds of steps.

For the exact dates of the different classes, please check the tab REGISTRATION>CLASS REGISTRATION

Required EXPERIENCE:

  • You have joined our basic level for a minimum of two semesters and...

  • You have social danced regularly (This is highly important!) Why? Classes will only get you so far; it is on the social dance floor, you truly learn to dance lindy hop.

  • You feel comfortable mixing 8- and 6-count and can lead/follow the difference with smooth transitions.

LOCATION/SCHEDULE:

  • Thursdays 18:30 - 20:00

  • Læssøesgade Skole (Gymnastiksal piger), Læssøesgade 24, 8000 Aarhus C

level Plus

— Only half a semester

The new Level Plus is for the highly experienced dancers in our community. The level is primarily for teachers or other dancers who have been active on the dance floor for several years.

The Level Plus classes are less about growing your vocabulary of different moves and more about diving into technique with great detail and more personal feedback from both the teachers and the other dancers.

The level is based on a give and take-approach. What you take from class is highly dependent on what you ‘give’ and how actively you participate//The more you ‘give’ and actively participate, the more you will take from class. Before the semester starts, you therefore might be invited to join a conversation with the Level Plus teachers (depending on the teachers) where you can contribute with ideas and take part in shaping the content of the following semester's classes.

Whenever there is Swingin' Thursday, the class is cancelled.

For the exact dates of the different classes, please check the tab REGISTRATION>CLASS REGISTRATION

REQUIREd Expereience:

  • You are a lindy hop teacher OR

  • You have participated on our Intermediate level for a minimum of four semesters and…

  • You have more than once taken part in a Lindy Hop dance event outside Aarhus, i.e., an exchange or a workshop.

  • Finally, we expect dancers of this level to have an average of 12 dancing hours/month for the past 12 months

  • Active dancing hours are the number of hours you spend dancing each month, including classes, social dance, workshops, teaching etc.

  • Why? Classes will only get you so far; it is on the social dance floor, you truly learn to dance lindy hop.

LOCATION/SCHEDULE:

  • Thursdays 20:15 - 21:45

  • Læssøesgade Skole (Gymnastiksal piger), Læssøesgade 24, 8000 Aarhus C

Thematic Level: Close embrace

— 4 classes

The thematic level is not a part of the regular semester schema but something to consider as a pop-up class.

Description of this semsters’ theme:

Blues is an umbrella of many small styles of dances: the Blues Idioms, e.g. stride, strutting and funky butt. However, they all share the element of a very close connection, the 'close embrace’. In close embrace, you are more connected to your partner than usual and it is, in fact, an embrace. It can be a little intimidating at first, but can also be an extraordinary, nice experience of synergy and care

It takes a little practise to get a hold of the balance, weight, position and movement of freedom in this close embrace. We therefore set up this theme class of four lessons, where we will focus on the close embrace and how to balance the closeness with different partners and different senses of personal space, so it can be comfortable for everyone. We will combine the close embrace with simple moves, that you may already know and some new moves that become possible or easier with this close connection

These classes are taught by Ida, an Aarhus Lindy Hoppers regular, and Cecilie, who is a lindyhopper and bluesdancer who recently moved to Aarhus from Copenhagen.

Whenever there is Swingin' Thursday, the class is cancelled.
