Get into the musicality and the groove of the swing music!
Led by Emil Efferbach, musician and swing dancer, this class focuses mainly on rhythm for swing dancers and draws directly on Emils experience as a live musician and swing dance teacher. We will explore a variety of topics; what makes the music swing, the subtle push and pull between musicians, slight timing variations, and shifting accents that give swing jazz music its dynamic character, and we will practise recognising and mirroring those concepts as choices in our dancing. These workshops will involve plenty of solo and partnered dancing and you can expect a variety of exercises such as rhythm drills, musicality, a little theory, timing, keeping the pulse, active listening, and how to translate these into clear, musical rhythms you can use on the social dance floor. As a special thing for these workshops, Emil will be bringing two other musicians to accompany the workshops with live swing jazz tunes!
This course is aimed for open level dancers. While beginners in swing dance will gain many valuable insights and get a good challenge, some experience with Lindy hop or solo jazz can be a plus, as these classes prioritise musical concepts and exercises over step‑by‑step technical instruction. Sign up as a Lindy hop couple or solo dancer and bring your ears, your feet, and your curiosity!
DETAILS
Emil Efferbach is a professional drummer and musician, as well as a passionate swing dancer and teacher. He started dancing through various socials in Copenhagen before signing up for classes in the Summer of 2022 and he has since studied from both local and international teachers at festivals and workshops, both in Europe and Africa. He enjoys exploring connection and improvisation through the music and rhythms within his dancing, and he travels frequently to learn and dance with other dancers and teachers in the scene, to continuously improve his dancing journey with inspiration and joy from others in the community.
With these workshops, he aims to teach with a musician's point of view to help swing dancers deepen the fundamental understanding on how to combine and connect rhythms in swing jazz with swing dancing.
